Preparing for Divorce

Below are some documents and things you can do when preparing for divorce and during the divorce process:

  1. Save at least the past 2 years of your financial documents (i.e., bank statements, credit card statements, debts, retirement account statements, investment account statements, etc.)

  2. Run a credit report to confirm what you owe and which credit cards, if any, you are the owner versus an authorized user.

  3. Create a reasonable monthly budget that allows you to live within your means - this will give you a better idea of your financial picture post-divorce.

  4. Separate your finances.

  5. Get any necessary medical, dental, and vision treatment done.

  6. Open your own credit card account.

  7. Close any joint credit card accounts, if possible.

  8. Remove yourself as an authorized user on any credit card accounts that belong to your spouse.
